Xavier De Enciso is currently in the process of creating "Through The Looking Glass: a Journey through Los Angeles' Rave History" beginning in the mid 1980s. There is no finalized date yet for its release (most likely sometime in 2013). If you have any content to share and contribute to this project, they started a facebook group: Click here.

Tree Wave is a band that makes unusally structured shoegazy pop noise. You may have heard them before if you watched "BBS The Documentary" in 2004. They use obsolete 70'd and 80's computer and videogame gear (Commodore 64s, an old PC FM sound card/OPL3, and a dot matrix printer) accompanied by female vocals. They also do video work made from an Atari 2600. They have a few songs up for free download on their website and I encourage you to get their EP "Cabana" which comes with two videos and a synth program for the Commodore 64. They even made an iPhone sampler app.

Electronic Music at the Grammys

This year during the 54th Grammy Awards ceremony, electronic music was more present than ever with Skrillex winning Best Dance/Electronic Music Album, Best Dance Recording, and Best Remixed Recording, along with Deadmau5 performing with the Foo Fighters. Its rise in popularity is mostly attributed to Jason Bentley who was part of a group which lobbied the Recording Academy to include the "Best Dance/Electronic Music Album" category and also joined the Los Angeles Chapter of NARAS in the early 2000s. He is now the Music Director at the Santa Monica based KCRW radio station as of 2008 and hosts "Morning Becomes Eclectic" after Nic Harcourt decided to step down. Jason Bentley previously hosted "Metropolis" on KCRW for 16 years which included interviews with Daft Punk, Sasha, Boys Noize, Paul Oakenfold, Freddy Be, Junkie XL, Paul Van Dyk, The Crystal Method, James Lavelle, Grabriel & Dresden, Hybrid, BT, Felix Da Housecat, Adam Freeland, Doc Martin, DJ Shadow, Photek, and John Digweed just to name a few. You can hear past shows of Metropolis here. He also hosted "Afterhours" on KROQ-FM and began at KXLU. Here are some older mix tapes of his beginnings in 1992.

The Grammys started in 1959 and an award is obtained through qualifying professional musicians who choose the winners. They are encouraged to vote within their fields of expertise and are required to vote based upon quality alone with no influence of sales, chart performance, personal friendships, regional preferences, company loyalty while any acceptance of gifts are prohibited. Everything you see there is pressure, velocity, and location sensitive meaning it can act as a XY control pad dependent upon the position of your finger when you press or drag on the pad. It works with USB, MIDI or OSC and will communicate with your favorite music software environments right out of the box. More advanced users and programmers can use the development kit and API to create their own code to respond to QuNeo's sensor data.

Novation has now released Automap 4.2 and what you are looking at above is their new "Novation Impulse." It is a MIDI controller with a full control surface which has 8 back-lit drum pads which can warp arpegios, roll beats and launch clips in Ableton Live, 8 knobs, 9 faders and buttons, it's USB powered, and comes with Ableton Live Lite, Novation's Bass Station synth and a Loopmasters sample pack. You can also utilize the expression and sustain pedal inputs as well as the MIDI in and out ports. They keys are sem-weighted and doesn't feel like a real piano but some people may find it easier to play.

Casio recently released the XW-G1 and XW-P1 which are a groove and performance synthesizer.

Teenage Engineering had some interesting surprises this year one of them being the "Oplab." It's a plug-and-play experimental board allowing you to interconnect virtually any electronic musical instrument. They have also turned a small hard drive into a controller from which you can "scratch" with, among other things, and found a shoe company that installs their MIDI "flip," "tap," and "poke" pads. If you are making shoegaze, now you can do it quite literally. I love freeform innovations like this.

As many know, they have recently entered the app world with Filtatron and Animoog (pictured in the front) but they continue their well known hardware innovations. Here we have the new "Minitaur," a compact plug and play analog bass synth with no menus to mess with. Inside it includes:

Nintendocore may also be called Nintendo rock, video rock, or nerdcore and is a derivative of hardcore punk, post-hardcore, metalcore, and heavy metal. It is very similar to electronicore or synthcore which I believe adds auto-tune. Some will attempt to call it 8bitcore... 8bitcore is actually another branch of a community similar to the work of Overclocked Remix except in reverse (taking primarily acoustically produced music and making it digital/8bit).

Once again, it's gear lust season. The holidays are upon us and NAMM 2012 is on the horizon. Many hate the consumerist mentality and rightly so. A good musician is quite often one who masters what they have as opposed to obtaining more things. But, there is always a beginning. Where would we be now without Robert Moog, Tom Oberheim, Dave Smith... we see nothing but great respect. Everyone needs a beginning somewhere. Each must choose their beginnings wisely and then master their trade. So where do we go now? We must be reminded that much of art is seeing more than what is presented on the surface. It is even more than just mastering a shiny new toy and developing a skill. The Roldand TB-303 was originally created to assist guitarists as a bass accompaniment and now it is a figurehead that piloted an entirely different genre with its signature "acid" sound. Keep this in mind as the holidays pass again and when I introduce NAMM 2012. Look at what you have now. Where is your mind? Maybe you've unwrapped it, but have you taken it outside the box?

Soundwalk will be held in Long Beach, California next week on Saturday October 1st and this time they will be exploring the concept of connectivity.
"SoundWalk is an ear-oriented art event produced annually by the Long Beach artist group, FLOOD. The evening operates under the concept of a five-hour audioscopic experience as provided by sound art located in various indoor and outdoor spaces situated in Downtown Long Beach. The artwork combines, in multiple ways, a wide range of media as well as other interplayful sensory elements. There are sculptures, environments, installations, both interactive and passive, as well as scheduled performances."

"One of the youngest artistic genres to have approached maturation, sound art has yet to be fully recognized, in Southern California, by the gatekeepers of mainstream culture. Volterock: Which years were you most active as a DJ?
Mike Brunt: 1966 through 1970, 1976 through 1979, 1980 through 1982.

What were some radio stations at the time which progressed electronic music?
Good question, Radio Caroline was always pushing boundaries, Radio Luxembourg before that but for music like Stockhausen and Faust it was the BBC especially when John Peel got going.

What was your DJ name and how have you seen the role of a DJ change over the years?
I was a DJ in the original Northern Soul scene at the Burnley Mecca-Cats Whiskers, my DJ name was MikeB some new me as Mike Brunt. The top line dance clubs at that time, were The Twisted Wheel in Manchester and Wigan Casino. Yes in some ways club DJ'ing has changed immensely, in other ways not much at all. The music delivery has been the big change, I mean in terms of mixing and scratching in my time it was customary for DJ's to banter a little, between tracks. The thing that has absolutely not changed is the need to keep people dancing. The other big change, in my view, is the emergence of the DJ as a major star, Paul Oakenfold etc.

Could you explain more about DJs bantering a little between tracks?
Well you were expected to say something, there were few if any long dance tunes so typically you would say who the artist and tune was and try to encourage people to dance, it was tricky though, too much talking and people would start to sit down.

When did you DJ at the Burnley Mecca-Cats Whiskers?
1966 through 1970

What were some popular tracks played there at the time?

Who were some of the other DJs you played with?
The only one I backed up who was famous at the time was Jimmy Saville from Manchester.

I read that you were born in the UK. Were you/are you very active there and would you be able to share the similarities and differences between the American and UK "scenes" over the years?
Musically I have been much more active in the USA, largely because of technology more than location. In terms of musical differences between the USA and UK, the 1980's were probably the most different. US "Hair bands" were never a big deal in the UK and many were considered to be "watered-down" versions of groups like Deep Purple. In the UK. electronic pop music became very popular, Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, SoftCell even Aha to a certain extent. There were crossovers both ways but largely speaking the UK and the USA were very different, in the 80's. Reflecting on music over the years, the USA was very influential, in the UK, in the 40's 50's and early 60's then it seems that turned around.

I started out listening to classical music, the first record I owned was Tchaikovsky' s 2nd Piano Concerto. Then I got pulled into Blues, this was in the earlier 60's, Sonny Boy Williamson blew my mind and still does. Jazz blew by me next, and I was blown back by John Coltrane, Miles Davis and a British "jazzer" called John Surman. The 60's progressed and what a time that was. I was in a group and we were experimenting with everything, light, music, volume, extended sets etc, etc; it was an incredible time. I recall being bored by the Beatles but eventually they blew my mind also.

The 70's started out as a let-down for me such bland pap, Disco revitalized that to an extent and Punk blew millions of cobwebs away. In many ways Punk reinforced the vitality of Raw Rock'n'Roll. I was a DJ in the 70's and found a way to play good music that everyone seemed to enjoy.

Next came the 80's and I continued to DJ and was revitalized by the New Romantic Era along with Electronica. Lot's of really good stuff in the 80's and I know I am biased but England was the place to be.

Now the 90's to me were almost as good as the 60's. I was not DJ'ing any more but my Son opened my mind to Euro Dance, Trance, Trip-Hop, Ambient and he was a great DJ in his own right. Yes the 90's were so great and I have so much music from that decade, Massive Attack, ColdCut, DJ Shadow, Ninja Tunes, Unkle etc etc.

So here we are in the 2, 000's, and I'm still fully absorbed in music. I am trying to learn Sitar, have a magical keyboard, a DJX, am considering going out again DJ'ing with MP3 files (I can always wear a bag over my head ;o). More importantly for me I have learned the magic and depth of Spanish Language music and I am starting to appreciate all over again. Nortec Collective out of Tijuana are brilliant, Cafe T'Cuba right back to Pedro Infante, Carlos Gardel, too much to write.

I just love Music, it invigorates and sustains me.

Any final words?
I think I said this already but I have always had music in me but never was dextrous enough to play any instrument well, so software was a major assistance to me in acrually making music. Software has enabled so much music to flow from those who may not have the physical dexterity to play traditional instruments, I can relate to that because that is what happened to me. Having been a DJ since the 1960' s and a follower of electronic music since then, Stockhausen, Faust etc, I often yearned to be more active. So I wanted to share, here, that thanks to Reason and Record, myself and my musical partner, Alexandra have created three albums and an EP in the past two years, under the name Co-Opera and inspiration continues to flow thanks to software.

EDC is one of LA's longest-running annual massives. The themes she will be addressing in this story include a critical analysis of media coverage on raves, the controversy over harm reduction measures as a response to drug-related risks, the apparent re-surge of MDMA use in America in the last 5 years, the economy of LA County and its dependence on large festivals for a revenue, and the attraction of EDM events in LA to fans across the country. You're watching anime. You love it so much. The characters are so intriguing with their wild yet perfectly arranged flowing hair and elegantly dressed attire from the latest virtual fashions. For a moment you dream of hanging out with them IRL... perhaps a live concert even. But then you wake up only to realize... Oh snap, it's real! And it's in your neighborhood!
A few weeks ago here in Los Angeles, California, a rising star named Hatsune Miku, most popular among Japanese pop culture, performed for anime enthusiasts everywhere. But, who exactly is Hatsune Miku? She is part digital animation, part 3D hologram, and yes she is somewhat human in audio form at least. Her voice was sampled from a professional voice actress named Saki Fujita. Miku's creators are Crypton Future Media who developed the now world famous voice. Anyone can do their own synthetic voicing manipulation through this program developed by them called Vocaloid. There is also a somewhat similar freeware application called Utau.

Acoustic/Electronic Hybrid Drumhead By Aquarian Drumheads

Thanks to the spectacularly amazing outstanding remarkable drummer Matt Johnson (who in fact taught me how to play the drums. Watch him play here), I was able to visit Aquarian Drumheads today and try out a new product they are testing called inHEAD. It is an acoustic/electronic hybrid drumhead that completely eliminates the unnatural feel of an electronic pad. It sounded exactly like a regular snare hit but with the added digital functionality. While I played on the head, I completely forgot it was triggering an electronic signal! It will allow you to play traditionally with only the lush acoustic transients or you can choose to mute it and play like a traditional quiet electronic kit OR you can do both, allowing for an acoustic and an electronic sound of your choice to hybridize your performance! It was also good to know that it will be compatible with all manufacturer’s electronic trigger drum modules.

On January 12, 2009, analoq made this daring personal proclamation: “My goal is to make some music using nothing but software that I wrote. Should be fun to try, at least.” ...and try he did! Radio in the 1930s

I was speaking with my Grandfather the other day about early crystal radios. This is how he would listen to the radio in California during the 1930s:

"In the 1930s, I would buy the crystal set which contained:
1) A fixed-germanium diode mounted in a lead base
2) A whisker wire
3) A set of ear phones
4) A copper antenna which I would hang in my bedroom

I would probe the crystal with the whisker wire until I found its rectifying property of turning an alternating radio signal into a direct signal - usually a faint voice. The federal government had designed many powerful clear channel radio stations. The only station that I could receive was the Los Angeles radio station KFI. I wasn't a ham radio operator but I had my fun."

"In 1874 German scientist Karl Ferdinand Braun discovered the "unilateral conduction" of crystals.^[6] Braun patented the crystal rectifier in 1899.^[7] Copper oxide and selenium rectifiers were developed for power applications in the 1930s.
Indian scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose was the first to use a crystal for detecting radio waves in 1894.^{[citation needed]} The crystal detector was developed into a practical device for wireless radio reception by Greenleaf Whittier Pickard, who invented a silicon crystal detector in 1903 and received a patent for it on November 20, 1906.^[8] Other experimenters tried a variety of other substances, of which the most widely used was the mineral galena (lead sulfide). Other substances offered slightly better performance, but galena was most widely used because it had the advantage of being cheap and easy to obtain. The free version of: "How to Make a Noise" by Simon Cann was just added to the Producers Training Lab. I read through it a few years ago and it's a great book to help you get started in electronic music production. He utilizes Z3TA+, Cameleon 5000, Rhino 2, Wusikstation, Surge, and Vanguard in his training regime but if you do not own these synths, there is still a great deal you can learn and some of the demos for these synths are available on the web. It will teach you how to use a variety of synthesizers and in the end, make your own sound patches.

He is currently the Associate Director of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA) and is part of the Global Visual Music project.

If you navigate your eyes to the top of this blog, you will see a list of new tabs for you to click. I've been working intently on these pages for the past few weeks and will continue to expand on them indefinitely:

The first is "EM Culture" which includes various youtube playlists I've been creating to encompass the history of electronic music culture, technology, spirtuality, and viral comedy. Beginning with mathematics, computing, audio recording, and voltage controlled analog synthesis; it then expands to the Avant-garde, club, demo scene, and rave culture into the 21st Century. There is also a section on visual aesthetics in motion with tutorials on various dances used within the culture. Lastly, there is a list of online communities by local region and genre to help you connect to your interests with an additional section on learning different electronic music genres. This is just the tip of the iceberg so go have yourself a look!

The "Radio" tab now has over 40 different radio stations, shows, and various audio streams categorized by geographic location and genre -- some of which are meta-stations that have multiple genres streaming simultaneously. You will never have nothing to listen to again.

Last is the "Producer's Training Lab" which will assist beginners, intermediate, and advanced music producers alike. You will find resources where you can practice ear training for free and teach yourself music theory. Remembering Max Mathews

Max Vernon Mathews, known as the Father of Computer Music and The Great Grandfather of Techno, passed away a week ago on April 21st, 2011 at age 84, after struggling with pneumonia. At Bell Labs, he created the first computer program for generating digital audio waveforms through direct synthesis in 1957. His program was appropriately called "MUSIC" and became a key landmark in electronic music history as we know it today. 1957 gave way to a whole new form of entertainment. Because of Max Mathews, an IBM 704 computer performed in New York City for the first time. Today, we live on from his remarkable impression and can revisit his lasting influence through recorded media:
