Richard Ray on Mother Turf
Mother Turf". Run by musicians, this very unique record label arose from Los Angeles and is now scattered throughout the United States. They are rapidly growing with more than 15 bands united in progressive artistry while relentlessly diving into uncharted sonic territory.
Volterock: How was the label started?
Richard Ray: Mother Turf began as my band. We played a couple shows, and I recorded a lot of songs. The idea of it being a label spawned out of necessity. I was collaborating with too many artists - and most of it couldn't be labeled as the 'Mother Turf band'. So, in 2010, Mother Turf as a collective/label was founded. Most of the first bands associated with Mother Turf are no longer around. 100 Onces, my band with Barrett Tuttobene, PlanesWalker and Indigo Child are the only ones that are still around today. But since about 2011 we've been establishing ourselves and with groups like Marshburn, Sketch Orchestra, and representing bands all over Los Angeles county as well as Portland and Boston. We're a group of friends who are down to play music.
V: Were there any official releases from Mother Turf, the band, before the label started?
R: Yes, there was an official release from the Mother Turf band - everything done by me and the help of a few friends. Hehe, it was called 'TripFuck'. I think it's still somewhere on the internet. Right now, I'm in 100 Onces and Sea Monkey See.
R: Our futures looking great - 100 Onces is touring Europe on Dec 3rd, and we're working with some great people to set up a distribution thing all over the globe.
